Problem: A Magnaplate customer in the aviation industry recently wanted to apply Plasmadize to a composite spar tool in order to trim the tool and release the composite spar from the aluminum tool. This isn't normally problematic, except the composite spar tool was 19 feet long and their curing equipment was only 16 feet long. Solution: The Magnaplate technical staff, however, solved the problem with typical ingenuity with a truly out-of-the-box solution. Given that only a specific area of the composite spar tool needed coating, the Magnaplate team built a frame, filled it with insulation and then put an insulation board on the back of it. A hole was cut so that the part would slide through the opening, and then fastened the frame to the opening of the equipment. This solution allowed 3 feet of the composite spar tool to remain outside the curing device, while maintaining a constant curing temperature inside, thereby enabling the critical area to be coated successfully. Plasmadize is a superior alternative to other common industry coatings such as thermal spray, plasma spray, HVOF, metalizing, twin arc, wire arc, and thermal powder deposition.
