Problem: Given the need to maintain a standard of 98.99% atmospheric purity in a clean room, it's not just the staff that needs to take extreme precautions; equipment too must be able to function without affecting the controlled environment. Recently, a Magnaplate customer was concerned about the packaging of contact lens care products in a clean room because saline solution not only causes corrosion, it can also seriously hamper production and affect revenue. Solution: After careful examination, Magnaplate decided that Nedox MR3 would provide the best solution and a sample of the coating was tested on the most troublesome machine. Nedox coatings are created by the controlled infusion of various polymers within a proprietary nickel alloy. Subsequent controlled treatment cycles assure thorough infusion of the surface with polymer material and concurrently increase the hardness of the matrix. Most types of NEDOX will survive 500 hours in ASTM B-117 salt spray. Selected types can withstand over 1,000 hours. Coating thickness will affect corrosion resistance. Special types can survive in Hydrogen Sulfide encountered in oil field applications. The result was that the coating of Nedox not only prevented corrosion, but also added lubricity that allowed higher operating speeds and enabled the customer to recoup some of the previously lost revenue.
