Problem: A leading manufacturer of vibration and temperature testing products contacted General Magnaplate regarding a galling problem experienced by a pneumatic hammer. The stainless steel piston was galling the aluminum cylinder and parts of the cylinder were cold welding onto the piston itself. The manufacturer was black anodizing the parts but this was not preventing the galling issue. Solution: General Magnaplate's technical team test-coated two parts with Tufram L-4/Black and the results exceeded expectations. The coating provided greater impact resistance and added permanent lubricity, as well as conductive resistance. General Magnaplate is now coating about 100 parts every month and the manufacturer no longer has to worry about failure caused by galling. Tufram is a superior alternative to other common industry coatings including hard anodize, hard anodize polymer impregnated (PTFE), hardcoat anodize, and sulfuric anodize.
