Problem: A ski goggle manufacturer wanted to eliminate silicon mold release from the manufacturing process but the molds in question were made from H-13 tool steel and due to complex geometry have some very tight areas of tolerance. Silicon mold release not only has serious environmental issues (it contains volatile organic compounds) it is also a very messy spray application. In addition, silicon mold release is a continuous expense and the customer wanted a one-off solution that did not need to be repeated. Solution: The customer's first attempt to solve the problem was to high-polish and chrome-plate the mold, but there was no significant improvement in performance. General Magnaplate's answer was to coat the high-pressure injection mold with a 0.0007" thick application of NEDOX, while masking the copper inserts. NEDOX not only provides molds with resistance to wear and tear, it also has excellent release properties ensuring the manufacturer met the aim of eliminating silicon mold release while improving the performance of molds. The coating has been applied just once and the tool has worked successfully for over three years, without downtime.
