How Nedox® Keeps Oil and Gas Wireline Equipment Free From Wear and Corrosion

It's no secret that running wireline is one of the most precarious operations in oil and gas facilities. Not surprisingly, it takes steel and aluminum enclosures, cable carriers and subs to keep the wires and toolstrings well-protected. But even these steel and aluminum structures and connectors need protecting. They are exposed to extreme conditions and, if damage should occur, it can be prohibitive to send repair personnel into dangerous and remote locales. At the same time, downtime is not an option. That's why it pays to make sure the critical metal surfaces that surround wireline housings are fortified with the right protective coating.

One such Magnaplate oil and gas industry customer relies on housings and subs to efficiently run its wireline. For safety and other reasons, the customer cannot have electric current in the application. And, predictably, these metal barriers need protection from harsh elements like mud, sand and water that can easily lead to wear and corrosion. Our customer credits Nedox® surface treatments for keeping the housings and connectors in a good state so wirelines can perform reliably in their punishing environments. Here's why:

The Magnaplate-applied process improves less-durable metal surfaces, adding properties that help them outperform and outwear the base metal itself. Featuring hardness up to Rc 68, Nedox self-lubricating coatings give metal parts exceptional wear resistance and eliminate the likelihood of galling or seizing. They also boast excellent corrosion, chemical and acid resistance. Additional features include:

  • Operating temperature range of -250 to +1200°F (-157 to 650°C).
  • Won't chip, peel or flake off.
  • Resists static buildup.

To date, our customer's wireline operations are running smoothly, with no reports of wear. In addition, the Nedox surface treatment helped stave off electric current generation to keep oil and gas equipment running smoothly and safely. This successful application is another example of how Magnaplate surface treatments provide effective wear and corrosion protection to keep critical equipment running in extreme conditions.
